My artistic perspective has been deeply influenced by both my affection for my childhood home of New York City and also by my deep love and respect for traditional painting techniques and materials. The classical architecture and rich history of New York juxtaposed against the Pop culture and pounding pulse of the city have served me both as inspiration and a mentor. I reduce the objects in the painting to highlight the relationship between the electric lights and the air quality and atmosphere. My post-modern perspective on landscape includes ephemeral light and deep perspective in my urban scenes. The effects of light passing through different qualities and seasons of air are familiar daily occurrences rarely singled out and observed for their luminous beauty.
I work with both a “wet to wet” technique as well as glazing and layering of color. I paint primarily in oil, but do use water based paints for studies and sketches. I have been known to paint on panels and canvas wrapped panels both primed with gesso to be smooth and even. I draw with a pencil directly on the painting surface and then add a final coat of gesso to seal in the graphite so as not to bleed into the paint. A faint drawing remains and acts as a guideline, especially in my large format work. I believe in the enriching power of art and feel strongly about making art accessible not just for corporations, museums and galleries, but that original art should be attainable for all people.
